Fitted Bathroom furniture – fitters guide

A lot of people are nowadays choosing to have furniture in their bathroom. By planning the bathroom design to their exact specifications, consumers are able to purchase a fully fitted bathroom suite tailored to their needs and style based on the layout, configuration and finishes.

With so many different colours to choose from in fitted bathroom furniture – wenge, oak, beech, walnut and birch to name just a few – one can create a bathroom which is truly modern and stylish. Modular bathroom furniture can be configured to any layout and size of room, so you can be truly creative with your new bathroom design.

There are a number of components need to achieve a fully fitted bathroom furniture suite:

Carcass
Doors
Legs
Handles
Worktops
Plinths
edging strip

When your bathroom furniture arrives from the supplier check all the components are there before letting the driver leave.

At this stage you will have a plan to work from, preffably a 3D CAD drawing. First job will be to assemble the furniture, fitting the legs and doors to the carcass. Leave the handles until the units are fitted. The units should now slot into their designated spaces according to the plan. You can now fit the plinth to the bottom to hide the legs from view, giving the perception of one flat surface with the door.

If you are fitting a vanity unit, you will need to cut the worktop to allow space for the basin. There should be a template supplied with the semi-recessed basin to aid accuracy in the cutting. The worktops can now be fitted and the basin thereafter.

With the basin and a WC unit you will obviously need knowledge of plumbing here, and unless you are qualified or very experienced it’s recommended you hire a professional for this work.

Once the sanitaryware is plumbed in the only job left is to fit the handles and clean up. Installing your own fitted bathroom furniture isn’t actually as daunting as you may you think.

Has your bathroom fitter cleaned up after himself?

So the job’s complete. You have a bright sparkling new bathroom and you’re happy with the job done, but has the bathroom fitter cleaned up after himself? One of the biggest complaints of clients hiring bathroom fitters is that they sometimes leave a mess behind. This can be anything from dirty rags to dirty mugs and the bathroom even been used.

Have a good look around to check. If you’ve had bathroom furniture fitted check inside cupboards and cabinets to see if there’s no sawdust or other dirt. Inside showers check the glass is clean and there’s no marks or even chips or scratches on the glass. If a bathroom tiler has done work check the tiles are clean and not smudged with grout.

Finding a bathroom fitter near you

Word of mouth is still the best for advertising for a bathroom fitter. Recommendations from jobs well done will always lead to further work, so ask around friends and family if they have ever used a local bathroom fitting company. Establishing a good rapport with customers and building a strong portfolio are the things to look out for when hiring a bathroom fitter or tiler.

Don’t be afraid to ask a fitter for details of jobs done, and references you can check. Designing the bathroom is not something you want to be doing often, so getting the work completed to a satisfactory level is paramount. An experienced tradesman will have pictures of rooms “before” and “after” their completed tasks.

Finding a bathroom fitter in the Yellow Pages or local newspapers is a good starting point for your search. Or you can use our directory here, the best way being to use the search function. To find the most relevant results type, “bathroom fitter” along with your town or city. Example: “bathroom fitter Essex”.

Once you have contacted a local bathroom fitter in your area he will arrange a time to come and view your bathroom and will then give you a quote. try to book appointments with at least three, so you can get an idea of prices and compare references and portfolios.

Remember, the cheapest price may mean the shoddiest work. Again, this is where “word of mouth” is so powerful, as you can chat with somebody who has used the services of the bathroom fitter.

Bathroom Tilers – designers with flair

if you’re hiring a tiler to do your bathroom or wetroom it’s a good idea to ask if they have a portfolio you can view. This way you can see how creative they are, what styles they work well with.

If you are hoping for a contemporary floral design but the tiler is experienced in more funky retro designs its plausible the relationship isn’t going to work out. Some tilers like to express their own ideas and creativity and sway the customer into what they think will work best. If the tiler has a good reputation it is a good idea to take on board his advice.

Bathroom tilers are traditionally very flexible when working with clients. If an exciting layout is needed, perhaps with the person’s initials in borders or inserts, they will often attempt it with confidence. When hiring a bathroom tiling company spend as much time as you need to properly convey your ideas for your new bathroom.

Wetroom specialists – modern bathroom fitters

In modern bathroom designs wetrooms have become very popular. Their minimalist style and ease of use are being seen everywhere from apartments to villas.

Because of their ease of accessibility wetrooms are an excellent solution for homes where the occupants may be elderly or disabled. Rather than having a bathroom which can look “institutional”, tiled wetrooms look stylish and modern.

Many bathroom fitters across the UK are honing their skills to adapt to their customers needs for wetrooms and walk-in tiled shower enclosures. This means becoming more experienced in intricate bathroom tile designs. Because of this trend we are seeing more and more creative wetrooms being designed, and styles which push the boundaries of modern showering concepts.
